President Bola Tinubu has expressed strong appreciation for Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, commending his commitment to peace and maturity during a political crisis that lasted nearly three years in the oil-rich state.

The crisis, which emerged early in Fubara’s administration, involved a conflict between his supporters and those aligned with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. This turmoil led to multiple attempts by the state House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, to impeach the governor.

Despite the challenges, Fubara and his faction, the Simplified Movement, reconciled with Wike’s Rainbow Coalition. They publicly acknowledged Wike’s leadership role, signaling a move towards unity.

Leadership recognized amidst crisis

Speaking at a recent All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign event in Port Harcourt, President Tinubu acknowledged Governor Fubara’s respectful reception of elders’ counsel and his dedication to maintaining peace during the trying period. He assured Fubara that his choices would be remembered positively.

This endorsement from the President offers encouragement to Fubara’s supporters, especially as the governor has indicated his hope for a smooth transition in his political career.

Prospects and political collaboration

Fubara has declared that Rivers State will contribute at least three million votes in support of President Tinubu’s re-election campaign slated for January 2027, signaling a significant political alliance.

Both Fubara and Wike praised Tinubu for his intervention that helped stabilize Rivers State and for investing in key federal projects, including the ongoing Calabar-Lagos Coastal Road. They also noted his appointments of more than 40 Rivers indigenes to federal positions, underlining his commitment to the region.

Impact for Rivers State and Nigeria

The resolution of the Rivers political crisis and the cooperative stance among its leaders are important developments for Nigeria’s political stability. The state’s peace and productive alignment with the federal government can foster socio-economic progress, while fostering national unity ahead of the 2027 elections.

Governor Fubara’s emphasis on peace and democratic values, supported by the President’s intervention, demonstrate a model for resolving political conflicts through dialogue, respect for elders, and strategic collaboration.
