The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has reported a significant increase in its revenue, rising from ₦7 billion in 2025 to over ₦12 billion in 2026. This growth underscores the expanding data protection and privacy framework in Nigeria as more organizations comply with regulatory requirements.

Dr Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, shared these figures during a meeting with the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC). He highlighted the evolution of data protection regulation in Nigeria, noting the transformation of the regulatory body through the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023.

The Chairman and CEO of the NSIWC, Major General Junaid S. Bindawa (rtd.), acknowledged the commission’s efforts and confirmed steps were underway to ensure compliance with data protection laws within public institutions.

Growing importance of data protection in Nigeria

The rise in NDPC revenue reflects increased activity in Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem, as public and private organizations prioritize safeguarding personal data in line with national regulations. This trend is critical for Nigeria’s efforts to build trust in its digital economy and protect citizens’ privacy rights.

Dr Olatunji urged full compliance from public institutions and stressed the necessity of developing skilled data protection professionals to meet rising demand. He also emphasized the need for competitive compensation to attract and retain such experts within Nigeria’s public service.

Capacity development and future collaboration

To assist the NSIWC in fulfilling its compliance obligations, the NDPC offered free data protection training and access to its Virtual Privacy Academy for capacity development.

Both institutions committed to ongoing cooperation aimed at strengthening compliance and enhancing Nigeria’s digital economy through improved data protection practices.

Why this matters to Nigeria

As Nigeria continues its digital transformation, effective data protection regulation is vital to protect citizens’ personal information and foster digital trust. The NDPC’s expanding revenue indicates progress in regulatory enforcement and growing awareness among organizations of their data privacy responsibilities.

For Nigerian businesses and government agencies, increased compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 will enhance consumer confidence and align the country with international data protection standards, which might encourage foreign investment and partnerships.
