At many Nigerian universities, students have become adept at identifying key topics from lecturers to focus their exam preparations. However, the challenge remains significant due to varying question styles and the lack of localized digital study tools. This gap motivated two former University of Lagos (UNILAG) students, Dare Oluwayanmife Adeola and Olamide Onigbanjo, to develop a specialized exam preparation application named UniBeta.
UniBeta’s journey began in 2023 with an ambitious goal: to become a comprehensive student super-app featuring timetable scheduling, CGPA tracking, peer tutoring, career guidance, and a marketplace for student-run businesses. This broad scope, however, led to technical difficulties. The app suffered from numerous bugs, failed multiple App Store and Google Play reviews, and nearly depleted the founders’ finances.
Recognizing the challenges and the peculiarities of Nigerian education—such as photocopied course packs and unique syllabuses not well understood by generic AI models—the founders refocused UniBeta’s mission. They streamlined the platform to harness artificial intelligence specifically for exam revision. The AI is trained to identify high-yield topics from past examination papers and core syllabus areas rather than attempting to offer an all-encompassing student service.
Before developing the software, UniBeta existed as a grassroots offline initiative. The founders organized peer-led tutorials across faculties, capitalizing on the insight that students often learn effectively from peers who recently sat the same exams. Alongside tutorials, they produced campus media content to engage students and operated a commerce arm supporting student entrepreneurs selling goods like thrift fashion and perfumes.
This multifaceted approach helped them build credibility and understand student needs comprehensively. However, attempting to combine all these services into one digital platform proved too complex early on, prompting a strategic pivot toward focusing solely on academic revision using AI.
UniBeta’s evolution highlights important lessons for Nigerian edtech startups: the necessity of focusing on core value propositions and adapting technology to local educational contexts. By addressing unique challenges faced by Nigerian students during exam seasons—particularly unpredictable traffic spikes and rapid drop-offs in user engagement—the platform aims to offer a robust, user-friendly tool directly responding to students’ study habits.
The development of UniBeta is significant for Nigeria’s educational landscape. It exemplifies homegrown innovation tailored to local realities, leveraging AI to improve academic outcomes. As Nigerian universities continue to embrace digital learning, platforms like UniBeta could play a critical role in helping students balance academic success with the social and economic demands of university life.
