Visa, a global leader in digital payments, has announced the launch of Google Pay for eligible Visa cardholders in Nigeria through a collaboration with Google and several Nigerian financial institutions. This new development allows cardholders to add their Visa cards to Google Wallet and make fast, convenient payments using their Android devices.

With Google Pay enabled, Nigerian consumers can now tap to pay at millions of contactless acceptance points and shop securely online across Google’s ecosystem. The service uses tokenization technology to protect card information by substituting card details with a unique digital token during transactions, enhancing security without compromising convenience.

Advancing Nigeria’s Digital Payments Ecosystem

The introduction of Google Pay marks an important milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing digital payments journey, responding to a growing demand for digital-first payment methods among consumers. The partnership between Visa, Google, and Nigerian banks aims to accelerate adoption of contactless payments, providing consumers with more secure and versatile payment options.

Andrew Uaboi, Vice President and Cluster Head of Visa West Africa, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, emphasizing Visa’s commitment to delivering innovative and seamless payment experiences. By supporting financial institutions in integrating Google Pay, Visa seeks to enhance digital commerce and financial inclusion across Nigeria.

Benefits to Nigerian Consumers and Economy

Introducing Google Pay expands payment flexibility for millions of Nigerians, enabling fast, secure transactions without the need to carry physical cards. This aligns with broader goals to promote cashless payments, improve transaction security, and drive the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.

Google also noted Nigeria’s position as a leading market for financial innovation in Africa and expressed enthusiasm about making everyday transactions safer and more convenient for Nigerian consumers through Google Wallet.

Overall, this development strengthens Nigeria’s digital payment infrastructure, potentially boosting consumer confidence in digital transactions, supporting local businesses, and fostering greater financial inclusion across diverse demographic groups.
